Custom tab colors for faster identification of critical documents

Hi,

Some colleagues have asked whether it would be possible to change the color of an open document tab. For example, emergency procedure checklists could be assigned a red tab color, making them easier to identify and access quickly among multiple open documents during a flight.

We envision this as a document-level setting, similar to the way color labels can currently be assigned. This would allow specific documents, particularly those containing critical information, to have a distinctive tab color that users could instantly recognize when working with several open documents at the same time.

We believe this enhancement could improve usability and help flight crews access important information more efficiently in time-critical situations.

We hope you find this suggestion valuable and worthy of consideration for future development. Thank you very much for your hard work and continued support.

Best regards,

  • Hi Veronica Albarracin Garcia / Avincis Iberia!

I'm on the product design side at Web Manuals, and I'd like to understand the situation a bit better before the team and I start exploring potential solutions. If you could answer as many of the questions below, that would be quite helpful 🧚‍♀️

    1. How many documents are typically open at the same time when this becomes a problem for your colleagues?
    2. Is this mainly during flight, or also during preparation and briefing?
    3. Would the colour be set centrally, so every crew member sees the same colour for the same document, or would each user choose their own?
    4. What do your colleagues do today to find the right document quickly? Bookmarks, ordering the tabs in a certain way, something else entirely?

    Thank you in advance! 🐙

  • Hi Nikol Zaharieva!

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to this improvement proposal. Please find my answers to your questions below:

    1. During operations, crews typically have several documents open simultaneously, including the Operations Manual, SOPs, normal procedures checklists, emergency procedures checklists, Jeppesen airport charts, base information sheets, and other operational references.
    2. These documents are primarily consulted and kept open during flight operations, but they may also be accessed and used during pre-flight preparation and briefing activities.
    3. The colour assigned to a specific document tab would ideally be configured centrally by the administrators/editors and applied consistently across the organisation. For example, all emergency procedures checklists could always be displayed with a red tab colour, allowing crews to identify them instantly.
    4. I cannot answer this with certainty, as each pilot is likely to have their own preferred method of organising and managing open tabs.

I remain at your disposal should you require any further information or clarification.

Thank you once again for your time, support, and the excellent work you do. We truly appreciate it.

  • Hi Nikol Zaharieva!

I forgot to mention yesterday that we would need this feature to be applicable to both Web Manuals documents and uploaded documents, such as PDF files. Some of our emergency procedure checklists are still published in PDF format.

    Best regards!
