Category ordering

Currently, categories are automatically ordered in alphabetic order or in numerical order.

The system should allow us to define the desired order, for instance via drag and drop.

The Permission setting to the category should follow the eventual move if the repositioning doesn't affect Role access, and the interface should give a warning in case it does (for ex. if moving a sub-category out of it's parent category).

  • I agree.

Currently, you can add spacing to the beginning of the category name to have it appear at the top, but it would be difficult to sort all categories this way. We only do this for key folders we want right at the top.

  • I would suggest to implement a priority function. The best place would be under Manage Categories -> Edit Category -> and then a new function Priority

basically the same as if you would implement a new Category or function on the left side of the Dashboard -> Settings -> Pages -> When you add or click on a existing Page you can define the Priority

A drag and drop function would be smoother off course but also can bear some more risks. Also I can imagine it could slow down the speed of loading of the system.

  • Kruschat, Alexander, this is also a good idea, even though it would require too many clicks as I understand.

To minimise the risk of a drag-and-drop function, the user could be prompet to confirm the category move.

Anyways, whatever solution that allows me to define the category sequence would work for me.

  • Hello Everyone.

    I love this discussion.

Sorting categories have been a topic since the beginning.
We are not opposed to building towards a drag and drop functionality for categories.
If a category is dragged to a new place, then the category list for that site will be sorted after the customized setup and not alphabetically.

If a category is moved and the action has permission implications then the user will be warned and will have to accept the permission changes.

I have a follow up question:

How will it work when you add a new category, will the new category be added at the bottom if customized setup is true?

  • How will it work when you add a new category, will the new category be added at the bottom if customized setup is true? I would say yes, that is why i thought it would be a good idea to generate a window with priority numbers. that way I can create a new Category and numerize it immediately having the effect to appear where i want it....

  • I hear you Alex, and we discussed it internally. The problem arises when you want to apply a category on a specific location and you do not remember the priority numbers you have applied to all the other categories.
The priority solution is great for short term, but as staff changes it is a potential bag of snakes.

  • though the same when writing above.....I also see potential chaos with drag and drop....Overall I am not sure if do generate too much chaos with this function. I mean we all work with the file explorer on our pcs, and if we want to sort folders we need to either number them or sort them alphabetical....its a tough one to decide :-) For me personally I can live with the sort function as it is now!

  • Thank you for the insight Alex, and I completely agree with many editors come a greater responsibility in making sure categories are not moved.

  • Stefan Baudoin Bundgaard, when creating a new category (i.e. a level 1 category), placing it by default at the bottom works just as fine as at the top. However, this decision could be an admin setting. The same logic would apply if new sub-categories are created.

Kruschat, Alexander, my only concern is that a category may have many sub-categories, and therefore sorting via priority numbers can be cumbersome.

  • Bruno, yes I was thinking about an admin activation choice as well.
