Cross-reference display text auto updated on "UPDATE LINK"

Wouldn't it be great if the cross-reference display text is auto updated (including chapter number) when updating the link to the cross-reference?

In today's version of Web Manuals, if the editor updates a cross-reference, the display text remains unchanged and the editor has to change it manually afterwards. For instance, the chapter title below changed to "Cabin Crew Preflight Checklist" but the display text remains as "Cabin Equipment Checklist". If the chapter number had changed, the editor would also have to be attentive and type the new chapter number. Alternatively, he may choose to just remove the cross-reference and insert it again in the various text sections throughout the manual (not an ideal work, I suppose).

In the scenario where the editor uses the wrench tool to update all cross-references at once, he will certainly overlook those for which either the chapter title or chapter number has changed.

I'm crossing fingers for an improvement ticket on this case.

  • Hello Bruno :)

    Good point!

The challenge for us would be modifying the manuals´ content without the user's approval.
That is why we have the cross-reference module. It automatically updates the page number and title if case of changes.

    Thanks for the input.

  • I understand the challenge, Manuela.

However, we users end up with the additional task to carefully check title/number changes, which may be easily overlooked. The cross-reference module has good intentions, but I'm personally resistant to use it as my manuals would be cluttered with too many tables.
